A 72-year-old patient, suffering from an inoperable pancreatic tumor, was successfully treated at the "F. Miulli" Hospital in Acquaviva delle Fonti (Ba) with irreversible electroporation, a modern minimally invasive technique performed under CT guidance. The patient had discovered the disease a few months ago and, after several evaluations at other centers, the tumor was deemed inoperable due to the presence of other concomitant conditions. However, the multidisciplinary team at Miulli made a different assessment, deciding to use this particular procedure for the treatment of the pancreatic tumor. Irreversible electroporation – specifies a note from Miulli – has the particularity of being performed under CT guidance – without any skin incision – and is based on the introduction of two or more thin needles into the pancreatic tumor. These needles, activated by a generator, emit electrical impulses that preferentially destroy the tumor cells, sparing important structures such as vessels and ducts.
